This page contains the main health risks for travellers and general recommendations. Travel conditions are different for everyone and each patient's health condition varies. Discuss your trip during a travel consultation with your doctor or in a travel clinic, preferably six to eight weeks before departure.

      Important health risks

      Malaria

      In the Amazon region:

      • There is a variable, but sometimes important malaria risk (90% P. vivax). The risk is especially high in the jungle mining areas, the agricultural settlements downstream from Manau and in the northern parts of Amapa, Roraima and in Acre, Amazonas, Rondonia (also in Porto Velho). We recommend the use of mosquito-repellent measures from dusk till morning, in combination with the use of malaria tablets.
      • There is moderate risk in the other rural forested areas of the nine states of the “Legal Amazonia Region” , also in peri-urban regions of Santarem, Belem,  Maraba and the city of Manaus. We recommend the use of mosquito-repellent measures from dusk till morning. For people with an increased risk, we sometimes recommend preventive malaria tablets, or taking an emergency treatment with you.

In the forested areas at the Pacific Coast in the states of Sao Paolo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santa and the Pantanal National Parc in the south of Mato Grosso the risk of malaria is very low. We recommend the use of mosquito-repellent measures from dusk till morning.

There is no risk of malaria in the rest of the country nor in large cities.

In case of fever during or after your journey, get tested for malaria as soon as possible.

      Yellow fever

There is risk of yellow fever almost in the entire country, with the exception of a part of the northeastern coast, Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza (see map).

      Other insect-borne diseases

Insects can transmit diseases such as dengue, chikungunyazika, leishmaniasis and Chagas disease.

      Ticks

      Ticks can transmit diseases.

      Rabies
