      Typhoid fever vaccination

      There are two different types of vaccines available against typhoid fever. Both vaccines offer approximately 60 to 70% protection from fourteen days to three years after administration.

      Typhim Vi®

      • Typhim Vi® is an injectable vaccine.

      • The dose consists of one injection.

      • Can be administered from two years of age and during pregnancy.

      Vivotif®

      • Vivotif® is a live, attenuated oral vaccine.

      • The dose consists of three capsules - one capsule on Day 0, 2 and 4.

      • To be taken on an empty stomach.

      • Store in a cool (between 2°C and 8°C), dark place.

      • The capsules may not be opened or dissolved.

      • Antibiotics and some anti-malaria tablets can reduce the effect of this vaccine.

      • Can be administered from five years of age, but not during pregnancy.

      When is typoid fever vaccination recommended?

      • If you will be staying in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh for more than three weeks.
      • If you will be staying in another country that poses a risk of typhoid fever for more than three weeks and:
        • This is your country of origin and you will be staying with family or friends.
        • Or if you will be staying in poor hygienic conditions.
