      Tick-borne encephalitis vaccination

Latest update: - Authors: Mieke Croughs, Ula Maniewski-Kelner

The tick-borne encephalitis vaccine (FSME- IMMUN 0.5 mL ®) is safe and effective. A lower dose (FSME-IMMUN 0.25 junior®) is used for children aged one to sixteen years.

      Vaccination plan

      • Three doses:
        • Month 0
        • Month 1 (to 3)
        • 5 to 12 months after the second dose
      • If there is not enough time, the second dose may be given fourteen days after the first.
      • First booster vaccination after 3 years.
      • The second booster vaccination takes place after five to ten years (or after three years for people aged 60 years and older).

      Period of protection

      • The first two doses offer temporary protection.
      • The third dose ensures protection for a period of 3 years.

When is tick-borne encephalitis vaccination recommended?

      • If you are going camping, trekking, hunting or walking during the high-risk season in an area where infection occurs.
      • If you are going to be spending a longer period of time in - or will be staying regularly - in an area where tick-borne encephalitis occurs.
