African tick bite fever
African tick bite fever is a bacterial infection that is transmitted by ticks. The ticks are primarily active from November through April.
Travelers are at risk during outdoor activities like camping, hiking or hunting in meadows or woods.
Disease symptoms (fever, headache, muscle ache and skin rash) generally appear 2 weeks after the tick bite. The site of the bite is often a red ulcer with a dark centre.
The disease can be treated with antibiotics.
